Early Life and Education
Kwon Hyuk-bin was born in Jeonju, South Korea, in 1974, growing up in a modest family. His solitary childhood fostered a vivid imagination, which he credits for his creativity. He graduated from Sangsan High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from Sogang University in 1999. During his studies, he was selected for Samsung's Software Membership program.
Rise to Success
Kwon's entrepreneurial journey began in 1999 with 4C Soft, an online education startup, which ultimately failed. Undeterred, he rejected a software engineering position at Samsung to pursue his passion for video game development. In 2002, at the age of 28, Kwon founded Smilegate in Seoul. A pivotal partnership with Tencent in 2008 led to the release of Crossfire, a first-person shooter game that became a global phenomenon. This success propelled Smilegate to become a major player in the gaming industry.
Key Business Strategies
Kwon Hyuk-bin's key strategy was to partner with Tencent, a move that brought Crossfire to China. The game's popularity in China was a major factor in Smilegate's success. Smilegate expanded into mobile gaming, esports, and entertainment, diversifying its portfolio and global reach. In 2022, Smilegate was estimated to be worth $7.55 billion. He owns 100% of Smilegate Holdings.
Philanthropy
Kwon is also actively involved in philanthropy. Through the Smilegate Foundation, he has established schools in China and Vietnam, providing education in IT and other subjects to underserved communities. He has also donated to his alma mater, Sogang University.
