Early Life
Hüsnü Özyeğin was born in İzmir, Turkey, in 1944. He graduated from Robert College in Istanbul and later pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. He then earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was the second Turkish MBA student. During his studies, he worked various jobs to support himself.
Rise to Success
Özyeğin's career began in the banking sector. He became the general manager of Pamukbank at the age of 32 and later served as general manager of Yapı ve Kredi Bankası. In 1987, at the age of 43, he founded Finansbank, which quickly expanded into a successful bank with over 200 branches in nine countries, primarily in Europe. He sold his interest in Finansbank in 2006.
Key Business Strategies
Özyeğin's success is rooted in identifying and capitalizing on opportunities. He established Finansbank and grew it substantially before selling it for a significant profit. He then founded Fiba Holding, which has investments in finance, retail, real estate, energy, and tourism. His strategy has included strategic investments across various sectors to diversify his holdings. In 2019, he handed the reins of Fiba Holding to his children, with his son Murat becoming chairman.
Philanthropy
Özyeğin is also known for his commitment to philanthropy. He founded the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation in 1990, which focuses on education, health, and cultural initiatives. The foundation has built numerous schools, girls' dormitories, and rehabilitation centers. It also provides scholarships and supports cultural heritage preservation projects. His philanthropy extends to establishing Özyeğin University in 2007, demonstrating his dedication to education in Turkey.
