Early Life and Education
Dr. F.C. Tseng holds a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Before embarking on his career, Tseng began his journey in the semiconductor and electronics industry at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in 1976. He was responsible for installing the 7.5 mm metal-gate CMOS process into the 3-inch line and later, it was converted smoothly to 4-inch under his management. In 1978, Dr. Tseng was promoted to plant manager of the IC demonstration plant, where he was responsible for the production and development of silicon-gate CMOS from 5 mm to 1.2.
Rise to Success
Tseng co-founded TSMC in 1987 with Morris Chang. He played a major role in establishing TSMC's operational strength. He served as the company's president from May 1998 to August 2001. Prior to his presidency at VIS, Dr. Tseng served as our Senior Vice President of Operations. Under his supervision, he established the capability to develop an advanced CMOS process. He established a solid technical base for TSMC's 6-inch and 8-inch fabs. His superior sense for talent and superb management was what made the difference. Chang has said that TSMC's early growth and success were largely due to the team Tseng built. He held various high-ranking positions within TSMC, including president, deputy CEO, and vice chairman before stepping down in June 2018. He is currently the Chairman of TSMC China Co., Ltd. (a non-public company) and Global Unichip Corp., the Vice Chairman of VIS, and the Director of eMemory Technology, Inc.
Key Business Strategies
Tseng focused on manufacturing excellence, particularly in an industry that focused on designs. He has also diverted more resources to opening foundries outside Taiwan, including one in Singapore. He is also looking to parcel out business to different TSMC fabs.
Philanthropy
Dr. Tseng has served as the Chairman of TSMC Education and Culture Foundation Since 2002.
