Édouard Carmignac was born in Paris, France, on September 5, 1947. He spent his childhood in Peru, where his father was involved in the import-export business. He received his early education at a British school, Markham College. He later pursued higher education, earning a master's degree in economics from the Sorbonne in 1969, followed by an MBA from Columbia University's Business School in 1972.
Rise to Success
Edouard Carmignac began his career in finance in 1972 at Blyth Eastman Dillon. In 1989, he founded Carmignac Gestion, which quickly became a prominent independent fund manager in France. The firm's early focus on technology, commodities, and emerging markets contributed significantly to its success in the 1990s. His firm's assets under management increased significantly, exceeding €50 billion after the subprime crisis. Carmignac was also one of the few fund managers to return positive results during the 2008 financial crisis.

Philanthropy
Edouard Carmignac established the Fondation Carmignac in 2000 to support contemporary artists and manage an international collection of over 300 artworks. He also created the Carmignac Photojournalism Award in 2009, which provides financial support to photojournalists. He also opened the Villa Carmignac on the island of Porquerolles in 2018 to share the collection with the public.
