Early Life
Edouard Carmignac was born in Paris, France, on September 5, 1947. He spent his early years in Peru, where his father managed an import-export business. He studied at Markham College, a British school, until the age of 12, and later earned a master's degree in economics from the Sorbonne in 1969 and an MBA from Columbia University's Business School in 1972.
Rise to Success
Carmignac began his career in finance as a financial analyst at Blyth Eastman Dillon in 1972 and later worked at BNP Paribas. In 1989, he founded Carmignac Gestion with Éric Helderlé, an independent and family-owned asset management firm. Under his leadership, Carmignac Gestion grew significantly, and its assets under management exceeded €50 billion after the subprime crisis. He stepped down from managing the flagship Carmignac Patrimoine fund in 2019 but remains active as Chairman and CIO.

Carmignac's approach has been to identify long-term trends, such as technology, emerging markets, and commodities, and invest accordingly. The firm focuses on active market exposure control and transparent risk management. Carmignac has developed hedging strategies to manage directional market risk. Philanthropy
Edouard Carmignac established the Fondation Carmignac in 2000 to promote modern art. The foundation supports contemporary artists and opened an exhibition space, Villa Carmignac, on the island of Porquerolles in 2018, showcasing a collection of over 300 artworks. He also created the annual Carmignac Photojournalism Award in 2009, which provides grants to photojournalists.
