Early Life and Career
Donald Francis Ahern was born in 1953. He was immersed in a successful family business from a young age, his father, John P. Ahern, founded Ahern's Trailer and Equipment Rental in Las Vegas in 1958. After graduating high school, Don Ahern launched Los Arcos Equipment in 1978. He received an accounting degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, before returning home to work in the family business. He purchased his father's company, Ahern's Trailer and Equipment Rental, in 1990.
Rise to Success
Don Ahern saw the opportunity to expand into the construction boom in Las Vegas during the 1990s, providing equipment rentals to the massive hotel-casino projects. His strategy involved on-site branches to provide convenient service. He merged Los Arcos into the family firm. Ahern combined the two companies in 1997 and vertically integrated the business. The 2000s saw continued growth, with revenues reaching $380 million by 2008. Ahern Rentals, which had grown into the largest independently owned American rental company, was sold in 2022 to United Rentals for $2 billion.
