Early Life
Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. Growing up in Barbados, she was influenced by Caribbean music, as well as American hip-hop and R&B. Her childhood was marked by her father's struggles with addiction, and her parents divorced when she was 14. She attended Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School and Combermere School. At the age of 11, she became a cadet in Barbados's Cadet Corps. Rihanna showed an interest in singing, dancing, and poetry and formed a girl group with two classmates.
Rise to Success
In 2004, Rihanna attracted the attention of Evan Rogers, an American record producer, who helped her record a demo. The demo led to an audition with Jay-Z, who signed her to Def Jam Recordings at the age of 16. Her debut album, *Music of the Sun*, was released in 2005, followed by *A Girl Like Me* in 2006, which included her first number-one single, "SOS".
Key Business Strategies
Rihanna's key business strategies revolve around diversification and inclusivity. She launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, emphasizing inclusivity with a wide range of shades, which quickly generated significant revenue. In 2018, she launched Savage X Fenty, a lingerie line designed for all sizes and skin tones, contributing to her wealth. She became the first Black woman to lead a luxury brand for the group when she partnered with LVMH to create Fenty fashion line.
Philanthropy
Rihanna established the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) in 2012, named after her grandparents, to fund education and emergency preparedness programs. The foundation directs funds toward climate solutions and women's entrepreneurship, with investments exceeding $100 million. In March 2020, she donated $5 million to COVID-19 relief.
