Early Life and Education
Cliff Obrecht was born in 1985 in Kingsley, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. He grew up in a working-class environment with parents who instilled values of hard work and education. His father was a government employee, and his mother was a school teacher. Obrecht attended the University of Western Australia (UWA), graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts and Education degree.
Rise to Success
Before Canva, Obrecht co-founded Fusion Books in 2007 with his future wife, Melanie Perkins. Fusion Books became Australia's largest yearbook provider, paving the way for their next venture. In 2013, Obrecht co-founded Canva with Perkins and Cameron Adams. Canva's mission was to democratize design, making it accessible to everyone. Under Obrecht's operational leadership, Canva rapidly expanded, achieving a valuation of $42 billion by August 2025. The platform has attracted over 240 million monthly active users worldwide.
Key Business Strategies
Obrecht's key strategies included focusing on user-friendly design, building a strong team, and securing funding from top investors. Canva's freemium model allowed for rapid user growth, while its AI-powered tools and enterprise solutions enhanced its value proposition. The company's commitment to innovation, including the launch of AI-driven features, has been instrumental in maintaining its growth trajectory. Canva's success is also attributed to its strong cash reserves and profitability for eight years.
Philanthropy
Obrecht and Perkins are committed to philanthropy and signed the Giving Pledge in 2021, committing to donate over 80% of their wealth to charitable causes. They established the Canva Foundation to support education and creative initiatives, and in October 2025, they donated $100 million to GiveDirectly to combat extreme poverty.
