Early Life
Chen Bang was born in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, in 1965, into a military family. At the age of 17, he aspired to join the army but was rejected due to color blindness. This setback redirected his focus from military service towards entrepreneurship and business.
Rise to Success
Chen Bang's initial ventures included a coconut juice agency, which was successful, but a later investment in the property market during China's economic reforms led to significant losses. Undeterred, he shifted his focus to healthcare. Inspired by a retired ophthalmologist, Chen founded the Aier Private Eye Hospital in 2001. Under his leadership, Aier Eye Hospital Group expanded rapidly, becoming the largest ophthalmology chain in China and growing internationally.
Key Business Strategies
Chen Bang emphasized research and development, establishing the AIER Eye Hospital Group Research Fund in 2012, investing $7 million annually. The group expanded through strategic acquisitions, including Clínica Baviera in Europe and stakes in U.S. and Singapore-based healthcare companies. Aier focused on accessible, high-quality eye care, supported by government policies and a cross-subsidy model to serve both affluent and underprivileged patients. The group has grown to operate over 970 eye hospitals and clinics globally.
Philanthropy
Chen Bang's Aier Eye Hospital Group has undertaken numerous initiatives to promote eye health awareness and provide affordable care in underserved regions of China. The group's cross-subsidy model supports treatments for impoverished patients, aligning with China's poverty alleviation strategy.
