Chairul Tanjung was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 18, 1962. His father was a journalist whose magazine company was shut down by the Suharto regime, causing financial hardship for the family. Despite these challenges, Chairul excelled academically, graduating from Boedi Oetomo Senior High School in 1981 and earning a dentistry degree from the University of Indonesia in 1987. He was recognized as a "national noble student" in 1984 and 1985.

Chairul Tanjung's entrepreneurial journey began during his university years when he sold books and opened a photocopy shop. After graduating, he established PT CT Corp with a loan.
