Early Life
Chairul Tanjung was born in Jakarta on June 18, 1962. His father was a journalist whose magazine company was shut down during the Suharto regime, leading to financial hardship for the family. Despite these challenges, Tanjung excelled academically, graduating from Boedi Oetomo Senior High School in 1981 and earning a dentistry degree from the University of Indonesia in 1987. During his studies, he displayed entrepreneurial spirit by selling books, T-shirts, and later, medical equipment.
Rise to Success
Tanjung's business ventures began with a medical equipment trading business in 1983. He founded CT Corp (formerly Para Group), a conglomerate with three main sub-holdings: Mega Corp (financial services), Trans Corp (media and retail), and CT Global Resources. Key acquisitions and ventures include Bank Mega, Trans TV, and the acquisition of Carrefour Indonesia, now rebranded as Transmart.
