Early Life
Chairul Tanjung was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 18, 1962. His father was a journalist whose magazine company was shut down during the Suharto regime, leading to financial hardship for the family. Despite these challenges, Chairul excelled academically, graduating from Boedi Oetomo Senior High School and earning a dentistry degree from the University of Indonesia.
Rise to Success
Chairul began his entrepreneurial journey while still a student, selling books and T-shirts, and later, medical equipment, to support his studies. After graduating, he founded PT CT Corp in 1987 with a loan. CT Corp grew to encompass diverse industries, including finance, media, retail, and property. Key business moves included acquiring Bank Karman (later Bank Mega), founding Trans TV, and acquiring a stake in Garuda Indonesia.

Chairul Tanjung is actively involved in philanthropy. He established the Chairul Tanjung Foundation, which focuses on education, entrepreneurship, and social development. He has committed $100 million to programs aimed at reducing illiteracy and poverty in Indonesia.
