Early Life and Education
Brian Hill was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His father, Jim Hill, was the founder of the Canadian luxury retailer Hills of Kerrisdale. Throughout his adolescence, Hill worked in his father's retail store, learning the intricacies of the business under his father and uncle, Forbes Hill. He attended Queen's University, where he graduated with a degree in economics.
Rise to Success
In 1984, at the age of 23, Brian Hill opened the first Aritzia boutique in Vancouver. Hill identified a gap in the market, aiming to provide high-quality clothing at accessible price points for young women. Over the next four decades, Aritzia expanded across Canada and, later, into the United States. The company's success is attributed to its exclusive in-house brands, including Wilfred, TNA, and Babaton, which generate a significant portion of its sales.
Key Business Strategies
Aritzia's strategy focuses on "everyday luxury," offering a curated selection of apparel. The brand emphasizes premium fabrics, meticulous construction, and timeless style, appealing to a broad customer base. The company has benefited from its strong presence on social media, with many items going viral. The company has also prioritized physical retail locations, offering a personalized shopping experience, including services like free coffee.
Philanthropy
Brian Hill's family charitable foundation, the ARON Charitable Foundation, has donated to various organizations. He and his wife, Andrea Hill, have also pledged $5 million to the Vancouver Art Gallery redevelopment.
