Early Life
Stefano Gabbana was born on November 14, 1962, in Milan, Italy. His parents, Piera and Lino, were working-class individuals. His father worked in a printing factory, and his mother worked in a laundry service. Gabbana developed an interest in fashion around the age of 15, particularly drawn to the designs of Fiorucci. He initially pursued graphic design, graduating from the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche (ISIA) in Rome.
Rise to Success
Gabbana's fashion journey began in 1980 when he met Domenico Dolce while working at Giorgio Correggiari's design studio. Gabbana honed his skills in sketching and tailoring there. In 1983, Gabbana and Dolce decided to start their own design consulting studio, and they officially founded Dolce & Gabbana S.p.A. in 1985. Their first women's collection debuted at the Milan Fashion Week in 1985, and their first store opened in Milan in 1987.
Key Business Strategies
Dolce & Gabbana quickly gained recognition for its glamorous silhouettes and celebration of Italian culture. One of the key moments in their career was when Madonna chose them to design costumes for her Girlie Show World Tour in 1993, which brought the brand international fame. They expanded their product line to include menswear, fragrances, accessories, and haute couture. They are known for their opulent designs and celebrity endorsements. Dolce & Gabbana’s success has been built on bold statements and a keen understanding of the fashion world. The company has always maintained a focus on the core brand, Dolce & Gabbana.
Philanthropy
Dolce & Gabbana has partnered with the LGBT charity The Trevor Project. The design house also works with the Point Foundation to help LGBT students pursue an education in fashion. In 2020, the #Fattoincasa initiative launched online workshops that encouraged creative projects at home. The initiative also aimed to raise funds for COVID-19 research. Dolce & Gabbana has also offered scholarships to outstanding students at the MedTec School at Humanitas University.
