Early Life
Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone was born in Rome, Italy, on March 2, 1943. He comes from a family with a long history in the construction and real estate sectors. His family, of Sicilian descent, had been involved in construction since the late 1800s. His father's passing in the 1940s interrupted the family business, which Caltagirone later revived with his brothers and a cousin after completing his engineering studies.
Rise to Success
After studying engineering in Rome, Caltagirone resumed the family business. He and his brothers, along with a cousin, restarted the construction company. The group constructed approximately 200 real estate complexes, comprising nearly 800 buildings. In the 1980s, he acquired Vianini Lavori S.p.A., a company involved in infrastructure projects. A key move was his 1992 takeover of Cementir S.p.A., which he transformed into a multinational company. In 1996, he acquired the Roman newspaper Il Messaggero, expanding into the media industry, followed by other newspaper acquisitions, leading to the establishment of Caltagirone Editore.
Key Business Strategies
Caltagirone's business strategy involved strategic acquisitions and diversification across various sectors. This approach included: transforming Cementir into a global player, expanding into the media industry by acquiring newspapers and establishing a significant publishing group, and making strategic investments in the financial sector. He has also been involved in significant infrastructure projects. Through Caltagirone S.p.A., he maintains a controlling stake in Cementir Holding N.V. (CEM), an international cement producer. Caltagirone has also invested in other publicly traded firms such as Assicurazioni Generali.
