Early Life
Barbara Banke, born in Thailand, initially pursued a career in law. She graduated from UCLA and Hastings Law School and practiced as a land use and constitutional law attorney. She spent over a decade arguing cases before the US Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal.
Rise to Success
In 1990, Banke transitioned from her legal career to join her husband, Jess Jackson, in his wine business, Jackson Family Wines. Together, they expanded the company, and after Jess Jackson's death in 2011, Banke took over as Chairman and Proprietor. Under her leadership, Jackson Family Wines has grown into a global collection of world-class vineyards and wineries.
Key Business Strategies
Banke's business strategy includes a hands-on approach, and she is known for a concept she calls 'creative anarchy,' giving winemakers freedom. She has expanded the company through acquisitions and strategic initiatives. The company has also focused on sustainability, with initiatives like the International Wineries for Climate Action.
Philanthropy
Banke is actively involved in philanthropy, supporting children's and educational charities. She has chaired the Sonoma County Wine Auction and contributed to projects like the Jess S. Jackson Sustainable Winery Building at UC Davis, and the Family Justice Center Sonoma County.
