Early Life
Daniel J. Hirschfeld's roots in the fashion industry are deep-seated. His family's involvement in retail began in the early 1900s with a men's clothing store. The business was later taken over by his father, David Hirschfeld, who established the foundation for what would become The Buckle, Inc..
Rise to Success
Daniel Hirschfeld took over the business in 1965. A key moment in the company's history was in 1967 when the store pivoted to focus on denim and casual wear, changing its name to Brass Buckle. In 1977, women's clothing was introduced, and The Buckle, Inc. was officially formed. He served as CEO until 1991 and as Chairman of the Board since April 19, 1991.
Key Business Strategies
Hirschfeld's leadership was characterized by a focus on youth-oriented fashion and disciplined expansion. The decision to focus on denim and casual wear proved to be a successful strategy, as was the careful approach to opening new stores. This controlled expansion helped the company avoid over-saturation. As of fiscal year 2024, private-label merchandise reached 43% of sales.
Philanthropy
Daniel Hirschfeld, through the Hirschfeld Family Foundation, has a history of charitable giving, mainly in Nebraska. The foundation supports initiatives focused on the well-being of the citizens of Nebraska, with a focus on monetary grants to specific, time-limited requests. The foundation's giving focuses on Education, Philanthropy, Voluntarism & Grantmaking, and Human Services.
