Early Life and Education
Cristina Junqueira was born in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, in September 1982. She moved to Rio de Janeiro shortly after her birth and was raised as the eldest of four sisters. She attended St. Ignatius College in Rio's Botafogo district. In 2000, Junqueira moved to São Paulo to attend the University of São Paulo (USP), where she earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering in 2004. She also obtained a master's degree in economic and financial modeling from USP. Junqueira later earned an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management in 2008.
Rise to Success
Junqueira began her career as an associate consultant at Boston Consulting Group. She then joined Unibanco, rising to head the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) sector. After Unibanco merged with Itaú, she became a portfolio manager. However, her frustration with the traditional banking system fueled her ambition to create a more accessible financial solution. In 2013, she co-founded Nubank with David Vélez and Edward Wible. Nubank's public debut on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2021 marked a significant milestone. The initial public offering transformed Nubank into Latin America’s most valuable digital bank.
Key Business Strategies
Nubank's success is attributed to a customer-centric approach, offering user-friendly digital services, including a no-fee credit card and mobile app. Junqueira spearheaded the adoption of AI, virtual assistants, and predictive analytics to enhance customer experience. This focus on innovation allowed Nubank to attract and retain a growing customer base and drive expansion across Latin America. The company also focused on creating an inclusive work culture, with policies supporting gender equality and maternity leave.
