Early Life and Education
Cristina Junqueira was born in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, in September 1982. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she was raised. She attended St. Ignatius College, a Jesuit high school in Rio's Botafogo district. Junqueira moved to São Paulo in 2000 to attend the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), where she earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering in 2004. She also earned a Master's degree from the same institution. In 2007, she enrolled in the One-Year Accelerated Programme at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, earning an MBA in 2008.
Career and Rise to Success
Junqueira's career began as an associate consultant at Boston Consulting Group. After graduating with her MBA, she returned to Brazil. She worked at Unibanco as head of the small and medium-sized enterprises sector. She then joined Itaú, Brazil's second-largest private bank, where she was appointed portfolio manager for Itaúcard. However, she left Itaú after her proposals for commission-free credit cards and direct communication for clients were ignored.
In 2013, Junqueira co-founded Nubank with David Vélez and Edward Wible, with the goal of disrupting the traditional banking model. The first product was an international credit card with no fees and 100% digital management. Cristina played a key role in building the company's culture, developing the brand, and defining its customer relationship strategy. As the CEO of Nubank Brazil, Junqueira has led the company's policy on inclusivity programs and fought to increase female representation in both tech and finance. Nubank has become one of the largest digital-banking platforms, serving over 53 million customers across Latin America.
