Early Life
Alexander Skorobogatko was born on September 15, 1967, in Horlivka, Ukraine (then part of the USSR). He came from a working-class family; his father was a miner and his mother worked as a salesclerk. Skorobogatko showed leadership qualities early in life, participating in judo and sambo competitions from age 12. He graduated from the Slavyansk State Pedagogical Institute in 1994 with a degree in physical education and later earned a master's degree in finance from the Plekhanov Russian Academy in 1996.
Rise to Success
Skorobogatko's business career began in the late 1980s with a perfume manufacturing company and construction material businesses in Crimea, in partnership with Alexander Ponomarenko. In 1996, they co-founded the Russian General Bank in Moscow. After Russia's 1998 financial crisis, they acquired stakes in stevedoring companies, eventually creating Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port (NCSP), the largest port in Russia. NCSP went public in 2007. Skorobogatko also served as a Deputy in the State Duma from 2003 to 2016, representing the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia and United Russia. During his time in politics, he stepped back from direct involvement in business, transferring his assets to a discretionary trust. Post-politics, he returned to business, becoming a significant shareholder in TPS Real Estate and TPS Avia, with a controlling stake in Sheremetyevo International Airport.
