Adriaan Tobias Mol was born in Breda, Netherlands, on March 14, 1984. His parents, Pieter Laurens Mol and Ludmila Danon-Mol, are both artists. As a child, he showed an interest in invention and, although he had a passion for computers from an early age. Mol chose to pursue his business ventures instead of a college education.
Rise to Success
Mol founded Mollie in 2004 in Amsterdam. The company initially focused on simplifying online payments for Dutch merchants. In the early years, the company focused on providing text messages to businesses and facilitated microtransactions. In 2006, Mol added an iDEAL functionality. The company focused on profitability from the outset, enabling organic growth. Mollie expanded its base across the Netherlands and expanded internationally, without taking on venture funding. In 2011, Mol co-founded MessageBird with Robert Vis. MessageBird took over Mollie's SMS and telecom services, allowing Mollie to focus on online payments. Mollie received an $800 million Series C round in 2021.
