Early Life
Zong Yanmin was born in November 1964, in Jinan, Shandong, China. He graduated from Shandong Institute of Light Industry (now Qilu University of Technology) with a degree in silicate engineering. After graduation, he worked as a process engineer at the Jinan Bulb Factory for 15 years. When the factory closed, Zong, then 38, decided to embark on an entrepreneurial journey.
Rise to Success
In 2002, Zong founded Jinan Tianye Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., acting as an agent for Volvo excavators and other construction equipment. His business acumen led to the company becoming a leader in construction machinery sales in Shandong Province. In 2010, he learned about the potential of silicon carbide monocrystalline, leading him to found Tianyue Advanced (SICC), which broke the monopoly in silicon carbide substrates. SICC's listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2022 propelled Zong onto the wealth lists, though the company has faced challenges since.
Key Business Strategies
Zong's key strategy has been to identify and capitalize on emerging technologies. His early move into construction machinery and later into semiconductor materials reflects a keen eye for market opportunities. In the semiconductor sector, Tianyue Advanced focused on silicon carbide, a critical material with applications in power electronics and microwave electronics, which allowed Zong to gain a foothold in a growing industry. The company has also strategically sought investment from key players in the automotive and technology sectors.
