Tom Gores was born Tewfiq Georgious in Nazareth, Israel, on July 31, 1964. His family, of Greek and Lebanese descent, immigrated to the United States when he was around five years old, settling in Genesee, Michigan, near Flint. In his youth, Gores worked at his uncle's grocery store while attending Genesee High School, where he participated in various sports. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in construction management.
Rise to Success
Gores began his career at Continental Telephone before co-founding a lumber-logistics software firm. In 1995, he founded Platinum Equity. Under his leadership, Platinum Equity has grown into a global investment firm. Gores's strategy involves acquiring underperforming companies and implementing operational improvements to increase their value. Within seven years of starting Platinum Equity, Gores became a billionaire. In 2011, he acquired the Detroit Pistons, further diversifying his portfolio.
