Early Life and Education
Tom Gores was born Tewfiq Georgious in Nazareth, Israel, on July 31, 1964. At the age of five, his family moved to Genesee, Michigan. Growing up, he worked in his uncle's grocery store. He played football, baseball, and basketball in high school and later attended Michigan State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in construction management in 1986.
Rise to Success
Gores's career began at Continental Telephone before he ventured into private equity. In 1995, he founded Platinum Equity in Beverly Hills, California. The firm's strategy, known as M&A&O®, focuses on acquiring and improving underperforming companies. Platinum Equity quickly grew, making numerous acquisitions across various sectors, including technology, manufacturing, and logistics. Gores's approach emphasizes operational improvements, cost management, and strategic growth. He acquired the Detroit Pistons in 2011 through Platinum Equity and became the sole owner in 2015.
