Early Life and Education
Thomas Carlyle Ford was born in Austin, Texas, on August 27, 1961. He spent his childhood in Texas and New Mexico. At age 16, he attended Bard College at Simon's Rock but dropped out. He then moved to New York City to study art history at New York University for a year. Subsequently, he studied interior architecture at Parsons The New School for Design, graduating in 1986.
Rise to Success in Fashion
Ford's fashion career began in the late 1980s, working as a design assistant for Cathy Hardwick and then Perry Ellis. In 1990, he joined Gucci as the Women's Ready-to-Wear Designer. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Creative Director in 1994. Under Ford's leadership, Gucci's sales increased dramatically, transforming the nearly bankrupt company into a global fashion powerhouse. He oversaw the acquisition of Yves Saint Laurent in 1999 and became its Creative Director as well. Ford left Gucci in 2004.
Key Business Strategies
Ford launched his own brand, Tom Ford, in 2005, encompassing menswear, womenswear, beauty, and accessories. He focused on a luxury business model with directly operated boutiques and select wholesale distribution. The Tom Ford brand is now owned by The Estée Lauder Companies while the fashion business is owned by the Ermenegildo Zegna Group through Tom Ford International. In 2022, Ford sold his brand to Estée Lauder for $2.8 billion. His designs are known for their modern elegance, sensuality, and meticulous tailoring.

Tom Ford has been involved in philanthropy. He created the Tom Ford Fellowship in Philanthropy in 2001 at Stanford University. Additionally, he has supported various youth outdoor programs.
