Early Life
Björgólfur Thor Björgólfsson, known as Thor Bjorgolfsson, was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, on March 19, 1967. From a young age, he showed entrepreneurial spirit. He ran a home video delivery service at 13 and managed nightclubs while in high school. He graduated from the Commercial College of Iceland in 1987 and later studied marketing at the Stern School of Business at New York University, earning a B.S. in 1991.
Rise to Success
Bjorgolfsson's career includes founding the Bravo brewery in Russia, which he sold to Heineken for $400 million in 2002. With the proceeds, he founded the investment firm Novator in 2004, diversifying into telecommunications and pharmaceuticals. He was Iceland's first billionaire, appearing on the Forbes list in 2005. However, the 2008 financial crisis caused significant losses, and he faced personal bankruptcy. He rebuilt his portfolio and repaid his debts by 2014. He is now described as an "adventure capitalist".
