Thomas Kaeser was born on August 14, 1953, in Coburg, Germany. He is the third of seven children. He graduated from Ernestinum Gymnasium in Coburg and then pursued studies in industrial engineering at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. He furthered his education with trainee positions in France and the United States.

Kaeser joined his family's company, Kaeser Kompressoren, in 1979. He became Managing Partner in 1985 and was appointed Chairman of the Board in February 2012.
