Early Life
Thaksin Shinawatra was born on July 26, 1949, in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai, Thailand. He comes from a family with a background in business. At a young age, he was involved in his family's businesses, including cinemas. He attended Montfort College in Chiang Mai before pursuing higher education.
Rise to Success
Shinawatra began his career in law enforcement, graduating from the Police Cadet Academy in 1973. He furthered his education in the United States, earning a master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University and a doctorate from Sam Houston State University. After returning to Thailand, he climbed the ranks within the Royal Thai Police, eventually reaching the position of Lieutenant Colonel. However, he left the police force in 1987 to venture into the business world.
Shinawatra founded the Shinawatra Computer and Communications Group in 1987. His business ventures expanded rapidly, including the establishment of Advanced Info Service (AIS), the largest mobile phone operator in Thailand, and Shin Corporation. These ventures significantly contributed to his wealth.

A key strategy was his expansion into telecommunications and technology, capitalizing on the growing demand for mobile and communication services in Thailand. His ability to secure government contracts and adapt to market changes played a crucial role in his success. His company's early adoption of advanced technologies and strategic partnerships further solidified his position in the market.
Political Career
Shinawatra entered politics in 1994, eventually founding the Thai Rak Thai party in 1998. He served as the 23rd Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006. His time in office was marked by popular policies aimed at reducing poverty and expanding healthcare, such as the 30-baht scheme.
Philanthropy
Thaksin Shinawatra initiated the Student Loan Fund (SLF) and Income Contingency Loan (ICL) programs to increase access to universities by lower-income people.
