Early Life
Stewart Horejsi was born and raised in Kansas. After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1962, Horejsi returned home to take over his family's welding supply company. He expanded the business and was faced with the challenges of a competitive market.
Rise to Success
Horejsi's journey to becoming a billionaire began when he read John Train's "The Money Masters" in 1980. Inspired by the value investing principles, he made his initial investment in Berkshire Hathaway at around $265 per share. Horejsi's strategy was simple: buy and hold. He held the stock for decades, and the compounding effect of Berkshire Hathaway's growth under Warren Buffett's leadership turned a modest investment into substantial wealth. In 1980 he discovered Warren Buffett, bought 40 shares of Berkshire Hathaway and now holds a cool $360 million dollars' worth.
Key Business Strategies
Horejsi's key strategy was a long-term, buy-and-hold approach, demonstrating remarkable patience. He invested in Berkshire Hathaway and maintained his position through market fluctuations, attending the annual meetings regularly to learn from Warren Buffett. The billionaire said: “I kept running the [family] business, but I just kept buying Berkshire. I can't really believe I put so much into one issue, though.”.
Philanthropy
Horejsi has also engaged in philanthropic efforts through the Horejsi Charitable Foundation, supporting educational and community causes.
