Shyam Sankar was born in Mumbai, India, and raised in Orlando, Florida. His father, born in Tamil Nadu, was the first in his family to attend college. The family moved to the United States when Sankar was two years old. The family ran souvenir and dry-cleaning businesses in the US before they went bankrupt.

Sankar earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University and a Master's in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He joined Palantir as the 13th employee and the first business hire in 2006.
