Early Life
Shayne Coplan was born in 1998 and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. He attended public schools in Hell's Kitchen. Coplan's early experiences included learning computer programming and participating in the initial coin offering (ICO) of Ethereum in 2014, purchasing the cryptocurrency when it cost approximately $0.30 per token. This investment provided seed funding for his future ventures and introduced him to the world of cryptocurrency. Coplan studied computer science at New York University but left during his freshman year to focus on blockchain technology and prediction markets.
Rise to Success
Inspired by the work of economist Friedrich Hayek and professor Robin Hanson, Coplan aimed to create a platform for crowd-sourced predictions. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he founded Polymarket at the age of 22, operating from his Lower East Side apartment. Polymarket allows users to bet on the outcomes of real-world events using blockchain-based smart contracts. The platform gained traction during the 2020 United States presidential election, correctly predicting Joe Biden's victory weeks before the official announcement. By 2024, Polymarket had raised about $70 million from investors, including Vitalik Buterin and Peter Thiel. In October 2025, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) invested $2 billion in Polymarket, valuing the company at $9 billion. This deal made Coplan the youngest self-made billionaire at age 27.
Key Business Strategies
Polymarket's business model revolves around facilitating the trading of shares that represent the likelihood of future outcomes. The platform generates revenue from trading fees, market creation fees, and liquidity incentives. In March 2026, Polymarket was poised to earn approximately $800,000 to $1 million per day based on the new taker fee parameters, projecting a monthly revenue of around $25 million. Polymarket acquired clearinghouse QCEX and has been taking steps to expand legally within the U.S.. The platform focuses on user acquisition, market depth, and data distribution, with trading volume expanding significantly.
Philanthropy
While specific amounts are unavailable, Coplan's focus on the growth and success of Polymarket suggests his current philanthropic activities are tied to its future ventures and the potential for broader impact.
