Early Life
Rudolf Maag was born in Liestal, Switzerland, in 1946. He is the son of a butcher. He initially trained as a butcher but had to change careers due to an accident. He attended Handelsschule in Basel and later earned an MBA from INSEAD in 1973.
Rise to Success
Maag's professional journey began at the Basel Trading Company (UTC), where he worked for three years in Ghana. He then joined Sandoz AG in 1973, holding various leadership positions in the agro division, including roles in planning, business development, and marketing. In 1986, he became a director at Institut Straumann AG. Three years later, Maag acquired the medical devices division of Straumann, founding Stratec Medical in 1990. He took the company public in 1996. In 1999, he orchestrated the merger of Stratec with Synthes, a Swiss medical device powerhouse, and built up a 15% stake, which was later sold to Johnson & Johnson.
