Early Life
Robert Hale Jr. was born in 1966 and grew up in Northampton, Massachusetts. His father was an entrepreneur in the clothing import business. Hale attended Connecticut College, where he served as class president and earned a degree in history.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Hale started his career in sales at MCI. In 1990, he founded Network Plus, a telecommunications service aggregator. The company experienced strong growth, but ultimately faced bankruptcy in 2002 during the dot-com crash. Undeterred, Hale founded Granite Telecommunications shortly after. Granite focused on providing voice and data communications services to businesses. Under Hale's leadership, Granite has grown to serve over two-thirds of the Fortune 100 companies, generating over $1.7 billion in sales in 2024. Hale's business strategy emphasized customer relationships and the reliability of traditional landlines, contributing to Granite's success.

Robert Hale Jr. and his wife, Karen, are well-known for their philanthropy. They have collectively donated over $400 million to cancer research, educational institutions, and other charitable causes. Some of the organizations they support include Boston Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Connecticut College. Hale believes in giving back and has said, “To whom much is given, much is expected”. He has also gifted $1,000 to graduating college students, split into two envelopes, with the instruction to donate half to someone in need.
