Robert Joseph "Bob" Fisher was born on August 26, 1954, in San Francisco, California, to Doris Feigenbaum Fisher and Donald Fisher, the co-founders of Gap, Inc.. He grew up in a Jewish family. Fisher attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University, where he received a bachelor's degree. He is also a graduate of the Stanford University School of Business, earning a Master of Business Administration.
Rise to Success
Fisher's professional history with Gap began in 1980 as a store manager. He rose through the ranks, working in the company's corporate headquarters. His roles increased in responsibility, gaining experience as a merchant and executive. In 1989, Fisher was named president of Banana Republic. He became a member of the Board of Directors of Gap Inc. in 1990 and an executive vice president in 1992. From 1993 to 1995, he served as chief financial officer. In 1997, he became president of the Gap brand. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2004, and in November 2019, he replaced Art Peck as interim chief executive officer. Robert Fisher retired as Chairman of the Board in 2020.
