Rajju Shroff, whose given name is Rajnikant Devidas Shroff, was born in 1933 in Kutch, Gujarat, India, to an entrepreneurial family. From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in chemistry, which would later shape his career. He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Mumbai.
Rise to Success
In 1969, Shroff founded UPL Limited (formerly United Phosphorus Limited). His leadership and innovative approach were pivotal in growing the company into a global agrochemical powerhouse. A key early achievement was pioneering the indigenous production of red phosphorus in India. This marked a significant advancement for the Indian chemical industry, setting the stage for UPL's future growth.
Key Business Strategies
Shroff's strategic vision included expanding UPL's product range beyond basic chemicals and creating innovative crop protection solutions. A major milestone was the 2018 acquisition of Arysta LifeScience for $4.2 billion, which significantly boosted UPL's global presence, making it one of the top players in the agrochemical sector. He served as Chairman and Managing Director of UPL for over 50 years before transitioning to Chairman Emeritus in December 2022.
