Phillip Terrence "Terry" Ragon was born in Arizona, the son of a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot. Due to his father's military career, he spent his childhood in various states and graduated from high school in Bogota, Colombia. Ragon displayed an early aptitude for science and technology, which led him to pursue higher education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Ragon graduated from MIT in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. In 1978, he founded InterSystems Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ragon Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and a record $200 million donation to MGH in 2019. They further announced an additional $200 million donation to MGH for a vaccine-research center.
