Patrick Hanrahan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 8, 1955, and grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, graduating with a B.S. in nuclear engineering in 1977. During his time at UW–Madison, he also taught a new computer graphics course in 1981. He furthered his education at the same institution, completing his Ph.D. in biophysics in 1985. Hanrahan's academic journey set the stage for his future innovations in computer graphics.
Rise to Success
Hanrahan's career took a significant turn when he joined Pixar Animation Studios from 1986 to 1989. During his time there, he played a key role in the RenderMan Interface Specification and the RenderMan Shading Language, contributing to the creation of the realistic animation seen in films like *Toy Story*.
In 1989, he became a faculty member at Princeton University before moving to Stanford University in 1995. In 2003, he co-founded Tableau Software. In 2019, Salesforce acquired Tableau in an all-stock deal valued at $15.7 billion, which returned Hanrahan to billionaire status.
