Early Life
Pan Shiyi was born in 1963 in Tianshui, Gansu Province, China. Growing up in a rural village, he experienced firsthand the challenges of poverty. After studying and graduating from the Hebei Technical College of Petroleum Profession in 1982, Pan Shiyi began his career. In 1984, he began working at the Pipeline Administration Bureau under the China Ministry of Petroleum. This was a pivotal point that led him to pursue his career in real estate.
Rise to Success
In 1987, Pan Shiyi transitioned into the real estate sector, venturing into Shenzhen and Hainan. He co-founded Beijing Vantone Co. Ltd. in 1992, where he successfully developed several properties. In 1995, Pan Shiyi co-founded SOHO China with his wife, Zhang Xin. Together they developed numerous commercial and residential projects in Beijing and Shanghai, making SOHO China one of the leading real estate developers in China. He served as the chairman of SOHO China until October 2022.

Pan Shiyi's success is attributed to his strategic vision and innovative approach. He focused on high-profile commercial properties in prime locations. He also hired renowned architects to design innovative and iconic buildings. Moreover, Pan Shiyi was one of the first in China to understand and leverage the power of the internet and social media, utilizing platforms like Sina Weibo to promote the SOHO brand. His projects often incorporated unique design features, catering to the Chinese market's needs.
Philanthropy
Pan and his wife, Zhang Xin, are actively involved in philanthropy through the SOHO China Foundation, which they established in 2005. The foundation supports education, healthcare, and environmental protection. They have donated to Harvard University and Yale University to fund scholarships for Chinese students. The SOHO China Foundation has also supported various domestic education programs and public welfare projects.
