Early Life and Family
Michael Teel was born into the family-owned grocery business. His grandfather, Tom Raley, founded the company in 1935 in Placerville, California. Growing up, Teel gained hands-on experience in various departments of Raley's supermarkets, learning the intricacies of the business from a young age. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Whittier College.
Rise to Success
Teel's journey to the top of Raley's began with him working in the stores at a young age. He took on roles of increasing responsibility within the company. He became a store manager and later led innovations in the bakery and the company's Bay Area expansion. In the 1990s, he ascended into senior leadership, becoming Chief Operating Officer in 1995, President in 1996, and CEO in 1998. After leaving in 2002, he returned in 2010 to take on the roles of President & CEO. In 2015, he became the majority owner of Raley's.
Key Business Strategies
Under Michael Teel's leadership, Raley's has focused on innovation and adapting to market changes. The company has embraced customer loyalty programs, introduced more organic offerings, and emphasized health-conscious choices. This has involved eliminating certain products, such as tobacco, and expanding the range of sustainable and organic foods available. Teel also expanded Raley's presence by acquiring the Bashas' chain. The company currently has over 200 stores across multiple states.
Philanthropy
Michael Teel continues the tradition of community involvement established by his family. The company, under his leadership, supports many local initiatives and charities. His mother, Joyce Raley Teel, created the nonprofit Food For Families, which has provided millions of meals to needy families. A scholarship fund, named after her, has provided over $250,000 to Raley's employees and their families.
