Mark Langhorn Coombs was born in April 1960. He was educated at Dulwich College and later pursued a law degree at St John's College, Cambridge.

Coombs' career began in 1983 at the Latin American department of Grindlays Bank, which was later acquired by the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group.
