In 2002, he met Zhang Yiming in college and shared a desktop computer which later developed into a long-lasting friendship and business partnership.

Liang Rubo co-founded ByteDance in 2012 with Zhang Yiming. He played a crucial role in the development of ByteDance's key products, including the short-video app Douyin (TikTok in international markets), news aggregator Jinri Toutiao, and the office collaboration platform Lark. In 2019, he became the global head of Human Resources before later taking over as CEO in May 2021 when Zhang Yiming stepped down.
