Lachhman Das Mittal was born in August 1931, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India. He earned a Master of Arts degree in English and Urdu from Panjab University, demonstrating academic brilliance and earning a gold medal in MA English.

Mittal's career began in 1955 as an insurance agent with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). He worked for LIC for decades, gaining a reputation for hard work. At the age of 60, he retired from LIC in 1990 and then embarked on his entrepreneurial journey. In 1995, he founded the Sonalika Group, marking a significant milestone in his career. In 1996, he established Sonalika Tractors, which quickly became a key player in the agricultural machinery sector.
