Early Life and Education
Lachhman Das Mittal was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, in 1931. He earned a Master of Arts degree in English and Urdu from Panjab University and was a gold medalist in MA English.
Career
Mittal began his career in 1955 as an insurance agent with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). He retired as a deputy zonal manager in 1990. In 1970, Mittal started producing wheat threshers, but the venture failed. He later founded Sonalika Tractors in 1996 at the age of 65. Sonalika Tractors has become the third-largest tractor manufacturer by market share in India. The company's operations span over 120 countries.
Key Business Strategies
Mittal's success is credited to his understanding of the needs of Indian farmers and providing tailored solutions. He focused on lower fuel consumption, maneuverability, and fewer emissions. A strategic partnership with Yanmar, a Japanese agri-equipment maker, has also contributed to the company's growth.
Philanthropy
Lachhman Das Mittal established the Sonalika Foundation, a charitable trust dedicated to promoting education, healthcare, and rural development.
