Early Life
Kavitark Ram Shriram was born in Madras (now Chennai), India, in 1956 or 1957. He was raised in a middle-class family. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Loyola College, Chennai (University of Madras). In 1977, he immigrated to the United States to pursue graduate studies and later obtained an MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business.
Rise to Success
Shriram's career began with Bell-Northern Research. In 1994, he joined Netscape as an executive. Later, he served as the president of Junglee, an online comparison shopping firm, which was acquired by Amazon in 1998. Shriram then became a vice president at Amazon. His most significant contribution came in 1998 when he invested in Google, providing crucial early funding that helped the company grow. He founded Sherpalo Ventures in January 2000, a venture capital firm investing in disruptive technologies.

Shriram's success stems from his early recognition of the potential in emerging technologies and his strategic investments. His move to join Netscape early and his leadership at Junglee showed his ability to spot trends. Philanthropy
Shriram and his wife, Vijay Shriram, are known for their philanthropic efforts, primarily through the Dhanam Foundation. They have donated substantially to Stanford University, including funding the Shriram Center for Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering and the Shriram Family Professorship in Science Education. The family also provides merit-based scholarships through the Dhanam Foundation to students in India.
