Early Life
Karl Scheufele III was born in Pforzheim, Germany, a city with a rich history in jewelry and watchmaking, often called the "Golden City." He received training as a goldsmith and watchmaker. At the age of 20, Scheufele was already managing Karl Scheufele GMBH, his grandfather's watch business.
Rise to Success
In 1963, Scheufele acquired the Swiss watch company Chopard. At that time, the company was a small, Geneva-based watchmaker. Scheufele merged it with his own business and moved to Geneva, transforming it into a global brand. Over the years, he has expanded Chopard’s product range to include jewelry, with the Happy Diamonds collection being a key success. Scheufele's leadership has focused on design, authenticity, and quality, with the company producing around 80,000 watches and 70,000 pieces of jewelry annually. Chopard has grown into one of the best-known luxury accessory lines in the world.
Key Business Strategies
A key strategy has been the family’s commitment to remaining independent, rejecting offers from larger luxury groups to maintain control. Chopard has also focused on innovation, such as the development of the Alpine Eagle watch and the use of Lucent Steel, a proprietary material made with recycled steel. Furthermore, Chopard has emphasized sustainability, using ethical gold since 2018 and aiming for 90% recycled steel by 2028. Karl's children, Caroline and Karl-Friedrich, now co-presidents, have played crucial roles in the company’s direction.
Philanthropy
While specific amounts are difficult to ascertain without direct access to their financial records, Chopard has partnered with various organizations and initiatives that support environmental and social responsibility, including the use of ethical gold. More information about these partnerships can be found on the Chopard website.
