Karl-Johan Persson was born on March 25, 1975, in London. He is the eldest son of Stefan Persson, who served as CEO and later Chairman of H&M. His grandfather, Erling Persson, founded H&M in 1947 in Västerås, Sweden, initially under the name Hennes, focusing on women's clothing. Karl-Johan's early life was influenced by his family's deep involvement in the retail industry, providing him with insights into the business world from a young age. He graduated from the European Business School in London in 2002, where he majored in Business and Economics.
Rise to Success
Persson's career began with an event management company, European Network Ltd., which he acquired in 2001 and later sold in 2007. In 2005, he joined H&M in an operational role, quickly rising through the ranks. He became the head of expansion and business development in 2007. In 2009, he was appointed CEO, succeeding Rolf Eriksen. During his tenure as CEO, he oversaw significant global expansion and championed sustainability efforts, including improvements in supply chain factory conditions and the launch of a fair living wage program in Bangladesh.
