Early Life and Education
John Phillips, a Canadian citizen, was born in the United States. He received a Bachelor of Arts and Science from Trinity College at the University of Toronto and later pursued an L.L.B./J.D. from the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.
Career in Law and Telecommunications
Phillips began his career in the legal profession, working in private practice at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP for 20 years. He then served as general counsel at Clearnet Communications Inc. for nearly six years. Clearnet was later sold to Telus in 2000.
Investment in Shopify and Angel Investing
In 2007, Phillips became an early investor in Shopify, an e-commerce software company. His initial investment of $250,000 at a $3 million valuation proved to be highly successful. He subsequently increased his holdings, and by 2019, he held approximately 4 million shares. From 2010 to 2023, he served on Shopify's board of directors. His investment in Shopify significantly contributed to his wealth, with his holdings valued at over $2 billion at the end of 2019. He used a simple checklist to make his investment decision: great management team, great product and market validation in the form of sales.
Other Investments and Philanthropy
Besides Shopify, Phillips and his wife Catherine have invested in other early-stage companies. The Phillips' Northpine Foundation has donated hundreds of millions to 168 organizations focused on climate, refugees, and formerly incarcerated individuals.
