Early Life
Guy Laliberté was born in Quebec City, Canada, on September 2, 1959. His interest in the performing arts sparked during his childhood after attending the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Laliberté produced events in school and later hitchhiked across Europe, earning money as an accordion player, fire-eater, and stilt-walker.
Rise to Success
In 1984, Laliberté co-founded Cirque du Soleil with Gilles Ste-Croix, initially as a project for Quebec's 450th-anniversary celebrations. The company, which focused on human performance rather than animal acts, became an international success, with shows performed in over 300 cities across six continents. In 2015, Laliberté sold a 90% stake in Cirque du Soleil. He later sold his remaining 10% stake in 2020.
