Gurbachan Singh Dhingra was born in Amritsar, Punjab, in 1950, into a business-oriented family. His grandfather initiated the family's involvement in the paint business in 1898. Dhingra pursued higher education at Delhi University, where he earned a bachelor's degree, setting the stage for his future business endeavors.

In 1991, Gurbachan Singh Dhingra, along with his brother Kuldip Singh Dhingra, made a pivotal move by acquiring Berger Paints from the UB Group, then led by Vijay Mallya. This acquisition marked a turning point in Dhingra's career, as he and his brother transformed what was then a small paint maker into India's second-largest paint company. Gurbachan Singh Dhingra currently holds the position of vice chairman emeritus at Berger Paints India. The entire Dhingra family resides in New Delhi.
