Early Life
Greg Brown, born in 1960 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, learned the value of hard work early in life. Growing up in North Brunswick, he spent his summers soliciting door-to-door to paint house numbers. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in economics. After graduating, he began his career at AT&T.
Rise to Success
Brown's career progressed through several key roles. He held positions at Ameritech, where he served as president of Ameritech Custom Business Services and Ameritech New Media Inc. He then became the Chairman and CEO of Micromuse, a software company, before joining Motorola in January 2003 as head of the communications, government, and industrial solutions sector. He played a key role in the acquisition of Symbol Technologies for $3.9 billion. He was promoted to chief operating officer in 2007 and became CEO of Motorola Solutions in 2008, a position he still holds.
Key Business Strategies
Under Brown's leadership, Motorola Solutions has undergone a significant transformation. A series of strategic decisions, including spin-offs and acquisitions, have reshaped the company to focus on providing mission-critical communications and video security solutions. These strategic moves have driven shareholder value, with an average annualized total return of more than 20 percent since the company split in January 2011. Brown has led the company's move into new technologies and markets through acquisitions. Motorola Solutions's current focus is on integrated communication and video security systems. The company's revenue for the year 2024 was $10.8 billion.
Philanthropy
Grateful for the role that education has played in his success, Greg dedicates his personal time and financial support to Rutgers University. He serves as chair of the university's Board of Governors and helped establish an athletic facility at its Piscataway, New Jersey, football stadium. Brown is also involved in the Chicago community, supporting organizations like Skills for Chicagoland's Future and the Executives Club of Chicago. He received the Daniel H. Burnham Award for Distinguished Leadership from the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.
