Early Life and Education
Andrei Kosogov was born on March 15, 1961, in Sillamäe, Estonia (then part of the Soviet Union). He graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree, where he specialized in nuclear power plants. He also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, which he received in 1997. Kosogov was one of ten Lenin Scholars at MPEI during his studies, awarded for excellence in studies.
Rise to Success
Kosogov's career began in 1990. After returning to the university, he worked as an engineer for a year. He then co-founded the Center for Automation of Thermophysical Research (CATR), where he served as the commercial director. In 1992, he joined Alfa Group, where he quickly took on an investment role. He became CEO of Alfa Capital and was responsible for the bank's investment units. From 1999 to 2005, he served as First Deputy Chairman of the Board and Head of the Investment Block at Alfa-Bank.
Key Business Strategies
Kosogov's strategic moves have included overseeing various successful transactions at Alfa-Bank. From 1998 to 2005, he was the First Deputy Chairman of the Board and Head of the Investment Block. He was also instrumental in creating and selling Alfa-Cement Holding. Additionally, he played a key role in the creation and growth of VimpelCom (now VEON). Kosogov co-founded the international investment firm LetterOne in 2013.
Philanthropy
Andrei Kosogov is involved in private philanthropy. Since 1996, he has continuously supported a hospital for children with diseases of the central nervous system. He also supports elderly Russian scientists. He received Russia's Medal of Honour for his charitable work related to childhood mental and neurological illnesses.
