Early Life
Gerald Wilfred Schwartz was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on November 24, 1941. His father, an auto parts business owner, instilled in him an early interest in business. Schwartz excelled academically, earning a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba. He furthered his education with an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1970.
Rise to Success
Schwartz's career began on Wall Street in the 1970s, where he worked at Bear Stearns and was mentored by Jerome Kohlberg, Jr.. He then co-founded CanWest Capital Corporation in 1977. In 1984, Schwartz founded Onex Corporation. Under Schwartz's leadership, Onex became one of North America's most successful private equity firms, managing approximately $50 billion in assets as of 2026. He stepped down as CEO in May 2023.
