Early Life and Education
Gary Tharaldson was born in Dazey, North Dakota, in 1945. Growing up in a small town, he developed a strong work ethic. He graduated from Valley City State University with dual degrees in Business Administration and Physical Education. He pursued graduate studies at North Dakota State University. He then taught physical education and bookkeeping before transitioning into the insurance industry.
Rise to Success
Tharaldson began investing in motels to offset taxes. He purchased his first Super 8 Motel in 1982 and expanded his portfolio rapidly. By his early 40s, he owned 16 small properties. When tax reforms in the 1980s removed incentives for hotel ownership, Tharaldson doubled down, partnering with local banks to build new, low-cost motels. His model proved highly successful, and Tharaldson Companies grew into one of the most prolific hotel developers in the country. He built and operated over 480 hotels.
Key Business Strategies
Tharaldson focused on cost-saving shortcuts and efficient operations to maximize profitability. He also launched his own construction company to keep costs low. He was known for building affordable motels in smaller towns. He also built prototype properties for Marriott and Hilton. In 1987, he sold nine Super 8 motels for over $5 million profit.
