Frank H. Laukien was born in 1960 in Stuttgart, Germany. He is the son of Günther Laukien, the founder of Bruker Corporation. His mother was a high school teacher. Laukien's upbringing in a family involved in the scientific instrument industry shaped his early interest in physics and technology.

Laukien earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard University. He started working at Bruker during his summers in college. After completing his doctorate, he joined Bruker full-time. He was appointed Chairman, President, and CEO of Bruker Corporation in February 1991.
