Edward John DeBartolo Jr. was born on November 6, 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio. He is the son of Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., a real estate developer. He attended Cardinal Mooney High School and later the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a degree.

DeBartolo began his career in the real estate industry, developing shopping malls as part of a corporation founded by his father. The Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation grew to become one of the largest public real estate businesses in the United States. In 1977, he purchased the San Francisco 49ers, which marked a significant shift in his career.
