In 1972, Dietmar Hopp, along with four colleagues from IBM, founded SAP SE (Systems, Applications & Products in Data Processing). SAP's initial goal was to create standard software for real-time data processing. Hopp served as co-CEO of SAP from 1988 to 1998 and as Chairman of the Supervisory Board until 2003. He retired from the SAP Board in 2005 but retained a significant shareholding in the company.

Key to SAP's success was its focus on integrating business processes and making data available in real time. The company's early financial accounting system, RF, formed the cornerstone for a modular system. Hopp's leadership was instrumental in transforming SAP into a global enterprise software leader. SAP's revenue in 2024 was $36.76 billion.
Philanthropy
In 1996, Dietmar Hopp transferred a significant portion of his SAP shares to the Dietmar Hopp Stiftung (Dietmar Hopp Foundation). The foundation supports sports, medicine, education, and social programs. As of 2021, the foundation had distributed around $1 billion.
