Early Life
Dietmar Hopp was born on April 26, 1940, in Heidelberg, Germany. He grew up in Hoffenheim, a small village in Baden-Württemberg. His father was a teacher. He studied telecommunications engineering at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, graduating in 1966.
Rise to Success
Hopp began his career at IBM as a software developer and consultant. In 1972, he co-founded SAP SE with four colleagues: Hans-Werner Hector, Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreuther, and Hasso Plattner. SAP's initial focus was on developing standard software for real-time data processing. Hopp served as CEO from 1988 to 1998 and as chairman of the supervisory board from 1998 to 2003. He kept about 10% of the company's shares after leaving the board.
Key Business Strategies
The key to SAP's success was its early adoption of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, which integrated various business processes. Hopp's leadership was critical in expanding SAP globally. SAP's launch of SAP R/3 in 1992 was a significant milestone, contributing to its global presence. SAP continues to innovate, including with SAP S/4HANA, its latest generation of business software.
Philanthropy
In 1995, Hopp established the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, which has invested heavily in sports, medicine, education, and social programs in the Rhine-Neckar region. In 2006, he transferred around 70% of his wealth to the foundation. He is also a major supporter of the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim football club.
